This is a chart I made to explain the Dual Channels concept outlined by Dr. Richard Mayer in his book, Multimedia Learning. The book contains a chart very similar to this. The concept is not at all difficult to understand quickly. However, I find it best to build the parts of the chart as I explain the process. Using a remote control, the graphics fade in smoothly as I discuss each point. If I displayed the entire chart at once, eyes would move over different parts of the chart searching for meaning rather than focusing on my words and on the part of the visual I was speaking about.
My audience contained native English speakers as well as those who could benefit from a little help in Japanese. As a compromise, the chart reveals English labels first, replaced by Japanese labels automatically as I progress, though I do not switch from English to Japanese and back again, which could be distracting for everyone. This chart is not a perfect solution, perhaps, but it has worked thus far.
